  • 'And gladly wolde he lerne, and gladly teche' - Geoffrey Chaucer

Despite looking like a foreign language, the above words are actually English! This quotation not only reminds me that English is constantly changing, but also that many varieties of English exist in this world where I "gladly" learn and teach.  I hope that students enjoy reading, writing, and learning in our class and connect our English work to their own lives.
Originally from Rochester, I attended Fairport High School, Swarthmore College (PA) and then Teachers College, Columbia University (NY).  Having always been an Anglophile, I moved to England to teach English and coach various sports (including some bizarre ones like netball and rounders!).  Immigration officials ALWAYS hassled me about the irony of an American teaching English literature and language to English students.  After ten years there, I returned to Rochester in order to study at the University of Rochester where I also taught pre-college and undergraduate writing courses in the Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity.  This year marks my fourth year teaching in Pittsford and my third year at Mendon High School.
On a personal note, my husband and I have two energetic little boys named Will and Max.  I spent much time this past summer pushing around a double stroller, convincing tiny humans that eating Play-Doh is a bad idea, and reciting The Little Blue Truck by heart.  (We also explored Upstate NY and showed some English friends the delights of Rochester in the summer!)
