MISSION STATEMENT for ART
The mission of art education in the Pittsford Central School District is to prepare students to be visually literate, foster an appreciation for the arts, express or communicate original ideas, and understand the interdisciplinary and cultural connections to the world in which they live.
As a result of participating in the PCSD Art program, students will be able to independently …
develop independent and critical thinking skills;
demonstrate willingness to experiment, innovate and take risks to pursue the process of art making or designing;
respond and reflect upon the artistic expression of others through global understanding, critical stance, personal connection and interpretation;
engage in the artistic process through the use of appropriate materials to independently create artwork;
collaborate ethically to create and share artwork/ideas with others.

3 Full Units of Credit to consist of 1 unit of credit in Studio Art and 2 units of credit from the courses listed below.
Studio Art satisfies the New York State requirement of one credit in Art or Music and is open to every student regardless of whether or not they desire an art sequence.
Art Major Sequence:
A five-unit sequence in art may be substituted for the three-unit World Language requirement for a NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. Art Sequence Options: 2D and 3D

Painting and Drawing I
Painting and Drawing II
Graphic Design I
Graphic Design II
Advanced Placement Studio in Drawing
Advanced Placement Studio in 2-D Design
Advanced Placement Studio in 3-D Design
Advanced Placement Art History (offered biannually)
Half Year (1/2 Unit) Fine Art Courses
* These 3-D Design curriculums may be taken for ½ or 1 full unit of credit.
The 3 and 5 Unit Sequences may be obtained through a combination of full and half year courses
These courses are open to all Sutherland High School Students and do not require a Studio Art Prerequisite
Advanced Photography (Photography I prerequisite)
Sculpture II (Sculpture I prerequisite)
