Walking and Biking to School - MCE Handbook

  • Walking and Biking to School

Mendon Center Road is heavily traveled, and our parking lot is a busy one. Therefore, children in grades  K, 1, 2 and 3 are not permitted to ride bicycles or walk to school without an adult.

If you opt to let your fourth-, or fifth-grade child walk or bike to school, you’ll need to fill out a permission slip and file it with the Main Office. Bikers must lock their bicycles to the racks at the front or back of the school. New York State law requires children riding bicycles to wear helmets. Children should walk or ride to school with a buddy.

Before letting your child walk or bike to school without an adult, it is a good idea to accompany them on the route they will take so that you can point out and prepare them for any potential hazards. To aid in pedestrian traffic, The Town of Pittsford provides Crossing Guards at some busy streets during the fall and spring (check with the Main Office to see when these seasonal helpers go on duty). Guards near MCE include those located at the trail that crosses Tobey Road between Calkins Road and Babcock Farms, and where that same trail crosses Mendon Center Road near the driveway to MCE.
