This year we will be using the Lucy Calkins writing program to enhance writing instruction. Our class will follow a version of the Writing Workshop model which looks something like this:

    10-15 minutes:Mini Lesson
25-35:Independent Writing and writing conferences (sometimes these are with small groups but mostly 1:1 with the teacher)
    10-15:Author Share

With each new unit of study, we focus on publishing at least one solid writing piece. As Reading and Writing instruction is integrated, we will be publishing pieces that tie into the reading genre we are currently studying. Some of these include personal narratives, opinion essays, research reports, and poems.

Reminder: You will not see these pieces (or most writing pieces) sent home because they will be writing in the blue spiral, which is kept in school all year. However, there will be chances such as parent conferences and the ice cream social to look closer at what your children have been working on. Their published pieces will remain in their student files as well. If you would like, you are more than welcome to schedule a time to stop in and take a look if you want to see their published pieces and work in progress!
