Reading Workshop

  • In 4th grade we will continue to work and build upon skills learned in 3rd grade.  Some major areas of focus will be:

    • learning to pick out and read "just right" books
    • developing the ability to think deeper about characters and their motives
    • making judgments about a book and supporting those judgments with text details
    • diversity in the genre of books we read
    • pair fiction with non-fiction and learn how to merge both genres into our writing
    • LOVE reading

    Book Talks

Remember to read a minimum of 25 minutes each night (of course you are certainly welcome to read more than the minimum).  This will help you prepare for your monthly book talk.  Book talks on a "just right" book of your choosing are due each month beginning in October. Click below to open the guidelines sheet and grading rubric and schedule.

** First next book talk of the year is due Monday, November 28th****

    Response to Literature (RTL)

Response to literature assignments will be an ongoing, year long assignment which will begin in October.  Each child will receive an RTL notebook and will choose from a pre-selected menu to write their RTL about an independent book, Stortworks or Scholastic article. Letters are due twice a month.  Assignments will be given out 2 weeks in advance and students are encouraged to work on the assignments a little bit each night at home.  Letters must answer the question being asked as well as provide text evidence to support the answer.  Letters can be handwritten or typed, but must be completed in the RTL notebook.
