Third Grade

  • Third graders meet for music classes two times during a six-day cycle.  We mainly focus on singing, moving, creating, improvising, music literacy, and having fun while making music together. Learning to play the soprano recorder is introduced into the third grade program in late September and continues throughout the year.  We build upon the concepts learned in primary vocal music to learn more complicated rhythmic patterns and the creation of dynamic ensemble pieces.

All students in grades 3-5 will need to have a soprano recorder.  At MCE, we use a model called the Yamaha YRS-23 (German-fingered). It is strongly advised that students have 2 instruments--one for home practice, and one that "lives" at school in a specially marked bin in the music room.  Order forms for new recorders will be sent home in early-mid September.
