About the Pittsford Driver Education Program
The Pittsford Central School District is not accepting registrations for the fall driver education program due to the required social distancing mandates from the New York State Education Department due to COVID-19. We will continue to monitor the situation for the spring semester. Please contact the Student Services Department at 267-1023 with any questions. Thank you for your patience.
The philosophy of Pittsford Central Schools Driver Education Program is to provide all students with a quality program which follows the NYS Education Department of Traffic Safety. The program provides a high level of customer satisfaction by providing program options, flexible schedules and responsiveness to individual student needs. Detailed information, including registration, cost and schedules, is available by clicking the links below.
Driver Education Requirements
Registration in classes offered is subject to the availability of qualified instructors. Pittsford Central Schools will make every effort to accommodate all students who have enrolled. Students must be 16 and have a permit by the first class. Please make your decision when signing up for a Winter/Spring Semester program that it fits your schedule. If you will be involved with sports, work or a school play that will interfere with your Driver Education schedule and you are unable to successfully complete the program, it may be wise to postpone this course until summer.
Students are required by the State of New York to participate in a 48-hour course of instruction. This includes 24 hours of classroom instruction (theory) and 24 hours of driving and observation (car classes). The State will not issue the MV-283 Certification of Completion unless the 48 hours have been completed. The Certificate of Completion allows a 17 year old to obtain his/her senior license and drive at night. It also provides a certificate to your insurance company, which should provide you with a discount.
Students are required to take all theory classes and driving classes. Any absence must be made up.
Theory Classes - a student may only miss two theory classes. They will be made up at the end of the session at a rate of $25 per class. If a student misses a third class, he/she will not be eligible to receive the Certificate of Completion (MV-283). There are three classes held on Monday and two classes on Tuesday. If a student is unable to attend a 5:00 p.m. class on Monday, that student can attend the Monday class at 7:00 p.m. with no charge. A student in the 7:00 p.m. class may switch to the 5:00 p.m. class as well. They may not, however, attend a class on a different night, as the instructor will be different. Students will be able to change classes twice during the course.
Driving Classes - a student may miss and make up two driving classes during the course with no charge. Any absence after the two will have to be made up at a rate of $25 per class. Students are encouraged to reschedule their class in advance on the website if they know they will be absent. By doing this, a make-up can be done before the anticipated absence. The student is responsible for going to the website, either prior to or immediately following an absence, to schedule a make-up. Please do not wait until the end of the session to schedule make-ups for earlier absences. We may not be able to accommodate your needs and you will not be able to receive certification.
Driver Education Registration Process
The sign up procedure is through our website http://www.pittsdrivered.org/. Registration requires creating an account on the website. Once you have created your account, select from the available programs, and the respective theory and car classes. There are an equal number of spaces available to each high school and small number of reserved slots for private school students residing in the Pittsford District. If you sign up for a program and it fills up, you will be placed on a waiting list. If a cancellation occurs, the next person on the wait list will automatically be shifted into the program. If you are bumped up from the waitlist into the program, please ensure that you make your payment within three days of the change or before the program starts, whichever is shorter. If you fail to make your payment, you will be dropped from the list entirely and have to start all over again.
After signing up for a program, the website will present you with a printable page of general information. This will contain the dates and times of all your classes, as well as a permission and agreement form that both parents and students must enter their name and check the agreement checkbox.
Additionally, if at any time throughout the course of the program you need to make scheduling changes, you may do so through the website. If you miss a class, the system will automatically reschedule you into the next available class closest to your time and notify you of the change. You must confirm this within 48 hours by going to the website, or your rescheduling will be dropped and you will be required to do it yourself.
You may also view a calendar of your present Driver Ed schedule to remind you of your classes at any time. You may log into your account from anywhere that has a computer with internet access. Your data is maintained on a secure server, but it is your responsibility to protect the security of your username and password. Do not give them to anyone! We cannot be responsible for any compromises of information if you allow your username and password to fall into someone else's hands.
The website contains an integrated help system that is able to assist you with all your management needs. Please consult the help system before calling the Driver Ed office. When in doubt, first check the website then use the e-mail support built into the website, and, if none of the aforementioned options are available or it is an emergency, call the office.
