About Me!

  • I am in my fourth year of teaching in Pittsford as a Reading Specialist and have worked at Jefferson Road and Allen Creek before coming to Mendon Center.  I enjoy being part of the Mendon Center family and working with so many wonderful people!

I graduated from Susquehanna University with my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Advertising.  I continued on and graduated with a Master’s of Science Degree in Reading & Literacies from the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester.  During my graduate studies at the University of Rochester, I studied under the tutelage of several prominent authorities in the literacy field.  I completed literacy practicums at both Pine Brook School and Buckman Heights in the Greece Central School District.  I also had the opportunity to do an 18-month long internship at Henry W. Longfellow School 36 where I worked with a diverse group of students from a variety of ethnic and social economic backgrounds.  During the 2012-2013 school year, I was in an extended sub position as a Literacy Specialist at Buckman Heights Elementary School for eight months.  It’s so rewarding to turn students into motivated and confident readers and writers!  Additionally, during my Junior year at Susquehanna University, I was able to fulfill a life-long dream to study abroad in Sydney, Australia!

I am committed to lifelong learning and am an active member of the Rochester Area Literacy Council (RALC), New York State Reading Association (NYSRA), and International Literacy Association (ILA).  In addition, I was reelected as the 2016-2017 Treasurer for RALC and have attended numerous events put on by these associations.  I enjoy and firmly believe in staying current with the latest research and best teaching practices.

When time permits, I enjoy reading, kayaking, biking, downhill and cross country skiing, scrap-booking, logic puzzles, and spending time with my (almost) therapy dog, Jax.

We will have many opportunities to learn and grow in the days ahead.  I am very excited to be here and am looking forward to getting to know you and your child in the upcoming weeks.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at Jennifer_Sweeney@pittsford.monroe.edu.
