  • PCSD Common Writing Units Overview

     

    These units are taught in all PCSD fourth grade classrooms.


    Expository/Informative Essay -
    This unit is taught within the writing workshop format. Students need to understand: (1) the difference between facts and opinions, (2) the structure of claims, reasons, and supporting evidence, and (3) how to analyze documents.  Students will also learn how to cite evidence for their claims. Finally, students will use what they have learned about analyzing documents and organizing an essay to craft their own essay based upon selected documents and questions.

    Personal Narrative -
    This ELA personal narrative unit is taught within writing workshop. Students are challenged to pick a significant moment, share a message and use a story arc to build a complete story. Skills and content are taught as mini-lessons within the writing workshop structure. Students take what they learn in each mini-lesson and try it in their own personal narrative writing. The classroom teacher confers with students about their writing process.

    Persuasive -

    The persuasive essay unit is taught within the writing workshop format. Students need to understand the difference between facts and opinions and how these two are linked to persuade an audience. Through mini-lessons, students will analyze various medium to learn about persuasion and the structure of claims, reasons, and supporting evidence. Finally, students will use what they have learned about persuasion to craft their own persuasive essay based upon a personal interest or concern.


    Poetry-
    This ELA poetry unit is taught within writing workshop. Students will become comfortable with poetry and experiment with poetic devices in their own.  Skills and content are taught as mini- lessons within the writing workshop structure. Students take what they learn in each mini-lesson and try it in their own poetry writing. The classroom teacher confers with students about their writing process.
