SEL Embedded in Professional Development
Teachers and staff at PCSD actively incorporate Social Emotional Learning in all schools at all levels. The District offers a wide-range of Professional Development classes which prepare our teachers to include SEL throughout the curriculum. A few examples include Adverse Childhood Experiences: Traumatic Stress and Education, Compassion Fatigue, Mental Health First Aid, Hidden Biases of Good People, Mindful Living Mindful Teaching, Supporting English Language Learners, Understanding Poverty, Restorative Practices, Allergies and Anaphylaxis, Integrating Body and Mind, and SafeZone Training for LGBTQ Students and Staff.
Social Emotional Learning is embedded into the PCSD culture. It is how we do business, allowing students to be their best selves and do their best work.
UnSelfie Book Club
Mendon Center Elementary started "UnSelfie" book clubs, one for parents and another for staff. The idea came from the book UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World by Dr. Michele Borba. The book clubs discuss and learn what parents and educators need to do to combat the growing empathy crisis among children today.
