Design Process/Problem Solving:

Students should be thoroughly familiar with various models of the design/problem-solving process, which includes the ability to do the following:

  • Evaluate a situation and develop a concise problem statement.
  • From the problem statement, write a precise design brief.

-        Properly investigate a situation using all available resources to research function, appearance, materials, construction, and safety.

  • Develop alternative solutions in multiple formats (writing, sketches, CAD drawings, preliminary models).
  • Construct a model/prototype using an appropriate medium, while safely using all available tools and resources.
  • Test and critically evaluate the success of personal work as well as the work of others.
  • Know when it’s appropriate to revisit the process to further refine work.

Time Management:

It is imperative that students learn the importance of time management.  Students need to work within deadlines, whether it is at work or in school, in order to efficiently function in the workforce.  In this step-by-step process, students should be able to do the following:

  • Establish goals.
  • Evaluate the given time period to create goals for both the short term and long term.  Schedule tasks to coincide with the duration of the assignment.
  • Consider the time allotment, materials required, guidelines, and limitations they will have to work with.
  • Periodically evaluate their progress.  How well are they keeping to the schedule? Rearrange tasks as required.  What, if anything, needs to be changed in order to successfully complete the task at hand?  Can this goal still be accomplished within the deadlines?
  • Make necessary alterations and continue.
  • Assess the progress of goals.  Have their goals been accomplished?  How could they improve their efficiency? What would be changed next time?

Computer Technology:

Students should be able to use computers as tools for designing, modeling, processing information, communicating and for system control and have the ability to master the following:

  • Apply needed information from media, electronic databases and community resources to complete research projects.

  • Navigate operation system.
  • Navigate the Internet to gather information to prepare a research paper.
  • Use different programs.
  • Use word processing software to create research papers.
  • Use presentation software to create multimedia presentations.
  • Enter data into a prepared/self made spreadsheet.
  • Create a table spreadsheet of data and use it to produce a graph.
  • Create technical drawings of objects for projects.
  • Use computer software to design projects, circuits, CNC code etc.
  • Use software to manipulate machines.

Information Systems:
Students should be able to do the following:

  • Use a variety of equipment and software packages to enter, process, display and communicate information in different forms using text, pictures, and sound.
  • Access needed information from media, electronic databases and community resources.
  • Use familiar communication systems to satisfy personal needs.

Research:

Students should be able to do the following:

  • Choose appropriate data bases, i.e. SIRS, MAS.
  • Choose and be able to use appropriate Internet search engines.
  • Correctly employ search procedures and techniques to maximize effectiveness of search tools.
  • Clearly understand rules governing plagiarism.
  • Clearly understand copy write restrictions.

Career Development:

Students explore career opportunities and skill requirements for occupations found within the various systems of technology.

The students should be able to:

-        Explore and identify career opportunities.

-        Demonstrate appropriate employability skills.

-        Understand options for training or re-training.

-        Describe training process for possible employment or mobility.

-        Predict future employment changes (understands economics of job market and possibilities of employment).
