Communication Norms
Multi-Disciplinary Team Communication Norms
As we support diverse learners and foster an inclusive culture, we recognize the importance of the way we work together as teams, including school staff, parents, guardians, students, and community partners. It is critical that we collaborate with each other to best support our students.
In recognition of our collective commitment to all students, the following communication norms were co-created in partnership between the Special Education Parent Advisory Group and the Special Education Advisory Committee.
We, as partners, value the following communication norms to foster a positive and consistent connection between the adults who support the student at home, in school, and in the community:
· Collaborating with each other and modeling positive problem-solving for our students as they develop their own independence and self-advocacy skills over time.
· Recognizing that the home, school, and community environments are different and that students perform differently in each setting. Their experiences in each setting are important and our observations of them in each setting are important.
· Striving to be direct, clear, honest, and respectful in our communications with each other.
· Encouraging balanced communications in order to build and maintain trust, sharing positive updates and strengths as well as issues or concerns.
· Establishing our preferred communication methods in a timely manner.
· Providing each other with the time and space to digest information.
· Remembering that we can disagree and have different perspectives while all caring for and supporting students; starting our communication by assuming positive intentions.
We are all here to support students; each of us has important experiences, observations, perspectives, and input to share!
