Pittsford’s newest school opened on the 60th anniversary year of the centralization of Pittsford Central School District. It is the first new school building to be added to Pittsford School District in 35 years. Built on a 45-acre farmland property on Calkins Road in Pittsford, the property was purchased by the school district in 1967 for use as a future school site. The site was the former family homestead of the E. M. Calkins family.

Voters decided in 2002 that changing needs and expanding enrollments necessitated the use of that property for a school. They approved a $106,000,000 bond issue in December 2002 that included a second middle school to the district. The voter-approved funds would provide for a middle school to house 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in addition to improvements on the existing Barker Road Middle School. This additional middle school would ease the overcrowding in the district’s one middle school that was built in 1967 for a maximum student capacity of 1,200 students.

Opened in September 2006, the new school was officially named Calkins Road Middle School. It is located near the intersection of Clover Street and Calkins Road, and is designed as an 800-student school. It contains an air conditioned library, a large group instruction room, a cafeteria to seat 300 students, an air conditioned auditorium, a six-lane pool with dehumidification system, a three-station gymnasium, five athletic fields and six tennis courts. It has environmentally-friendly geothermal heating and cooling systems and was designed to blend visually into the surrounding residential and agricultural area.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Calkins Road Middle School took place on Saturday October 30, 2004. The building was designed to fit into the farmland/neighborhood setting on Calkins Road. Doors of the new school opened for school on September 5, 2006 when the 2006-2007 school year commenced. As the newest school in the District, Calkins Road Middle School was opened with an enrollment of approximately 700 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. It will bring the total number of schools in the District to nine—five elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.
