Back to School Information 2022-2023
Below is some important information for families. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Schedule –Class periods are 39 minutes with a 4 minute passing time. Lunch periods are 30 minutes.
Open House – Our Open House this year is on September 15th and will be in person. Open House will be from 6-8pm. Shuttle buses will be provided from MCE to avoid parking lot congestion. More information about Open House will be coming from the school after the start of the year.
6th Grade Orientations - Our 6th grade WEB orientation will be on Thursday, August 25th from 8am—12n. Incoming 6th grade students should be dropped off in the front of the building (bus loop) and will enter the building through the cafeteria doors by the flagpole. This is a student-only event. Our newest MidKnights will participate in both large and small group activities, working with 8th grade student WEB leaders during the morning. These are connections that will continue throughout the school year.
New Student Orientation - On Wednesday, August 24th, we will have our New Student Orientation from 9—10am. This program is for students new to Pittsford Schools and coming to CRMS in grades 6-8. Our counselors and some WEB leaders will facilitate this welcome to PCSD for our students. Parents are welcome to stay and meet some of our staff and PTSA members in a coffee meet and greet in the Counseling office.
Lockers & Backpacks – Students will be issued a locker at the beginning of the year. Students will be expected to use their lockers and will not be allowed to carry backpacks during the day. Teachers will help instruct students on "backpack management," aka when to stop at the locker during the day. Students will be issued a school laptop along with a padded carrying case.
Personal devices (1:1 policy) – For the school year 2022-2023, we are entering the second year of our 1:1 practice, and students will be issued a school laptop to bring to and from school each day (along with a charger and protective sleeve). These devices are for academic purposes only, and parents and students should review the PCSD Bring Your Own Device Policy as well as the EIN form (signed at the start of 6th grade). More information will be sent before the start of the year. 7th and 8th graders have their device from last year, and 6th graders will be issued their device during the first week of the year.
Lunch periods - We will be using the Commons for lunch periods this year. All of our regular lunch options will be available for our students.
PE class/locker rooms - Changing for PE class remains optional, but students are expected to be dressed appropriately for physical activity, potentially going outside, etc. Arrangements will be made on special occasions (i.e. presenting in another class, picture day, etc.) to accommodate those that need to change.
Homeroom/1st period - To clarify, a student's "homeroom" is their first period class. Unlike last year when the students were in assigned pods at the start of the day, this is a return to pre-COVID scheduling. The first period time slot is extended for 3 minutes to allow for morning announcements.
Parent portal IC – Parents will be able to monitor student progress through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. All returning PCSD parents should already have access. Parents new to PCSD will be contacted by the school within the first two weeks to set up the portal account.
PTSA – Our PTSA remains a wonderful partner and support for our students, teachers and programs. Please consider joining the PTSA. More information can be found on their webpage.
CRMS communications – Announcements will be emailed home daily to parents. A Principal’s Update newsletter is emailed and posted monthly. Please follow Calkins Road on Twitter at @PCSDCalkinsRd.
