    Back to School Information 2020-2021

We have been working diligently for the opening of school and return of our MidKnight students. Student safety is our top priority and we have made adjustments to our structures and processes in order to support our students and teachers. Below are some of the important updates and changes. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Schedule – Our students will follow their 9 period schedule after starting the day with a 5 minute homeroom. We have increased our passing time to 5 minutes to allow for teacher movement, classes are 37 minutes long. Students will have a 30 minute lunch.

Cohorts – For the majority of their classes, students will remain with their “pod” on team. Encore area classes will also be on team (usually this is mixed).

Masks – Students and staff are expected to be wearing masks at all times (school bus, classrooms, hallways, etc.). Teachers will provide short mask breaks in each class for students while maintaining safety protocols. Please note that “gaiters” are not an acceptable style of facemask.

Open House – Our Open House this year is on September 24th and will be virtual. Parents will be able to see the teachers and hear about class content and expectations. This will be posted to the CRMS website.

Lockers & Backpacks – Students will not be issued a locker at the beginning of the year. Students will be able to bring their backpacks to their homeroom and leave them there during the day. They will be able bring what supplies they need for each class.

Lunch – Lunch periods will remain at 30 minutes and students will be eating in their homeroom. Students will have the opportunity to pre-order a sandwich, wrap, or salad in the morning.

Student health screenings – Parents will need to complete a temperature and symptom screening before coming to school. Any student exhibiting a fever of over 100 or COVID symptoms is not permitted to come to school. Students exhibiting symptoms will be evaluated by the school nurse and quarantined in the building until picked up by their parent. The district will be using a health app to assist with this process (information coming soon).

Personal devices – As we begin the 2020-2021 school year, students are able and even encouraged to bring personal devices (laptops or tablets) to school if needed and/or possible. Students will be working on Microsoft Teams with each class, and this could assist our students with continuity with devices. These devices are for academic purposes only, and parents and students should review the PCSD Bring Your Own Device Policy as well as the EIN form (signed at the start of 6th grade).

Student assignments – All teachers will be using Microsoft Teams to assign student work. Student performance will be recorded in Infinite Campus.

Music ensemble groups – Orchestra students will be able to play 6 feet apart in the orchestra room. Band and chorus students will still have the opportunity to engage in their ensemble. Students will be spaced 12 feet apart when playing or singing.

Music Lessons – Music lessons will be done virtually this year.

Parent portal IC – Parents will be able to monitor student progress through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. All returning PCSD parents should already have access. Parents new to PCSD will be contacted by the school within the first two weeks to set up the portal account.

Attendance policy – Students are expected to be signed in on time for their hybrid or remote learning sessions. Attendance will be taken.

Student arrival/dismissal: The building will open for students at 7am. Students arriving before 7:15am will be directed to the Commons and/or auditorium to remain socially distanced. At 7:15am, those students, and any others arriving after that time, will proceed directly to their homeroom. At dismissal time, students will be released from the 9th period class alphabetically in order to minimize hallway congestion as students exit the building.

PTSA – Our PTSA remains a wonderful partner and support for our students, teachers and programs. Please consider joining the PTSA. More information can be found on their webpage.

CRMS communications – Announcements will be emailed home daily to parents. A Principal’s Update newsletter is emailed and posted monthly. Please follow Calkins Road on Twitter at @PCSDCalkinsRd.
