Board Insights: PCSD in the Community

So much of the focus of our Board and administration is on the work we do within our buildings to support our students in their educational journey. However, a big part of our mission as a District is to teach students how to be independent, healthy, resilient, and compassionate contributors to our community and beyond.

With that in mind, we draw attention to the many ways that Pittsford Central School District (PCSD) is both directly and indirectly involved in initiatives that support our entire community. Here are a few examples of the work done across PCSD to help achieve a more supportive and inclusive community within Pittsford, Rochester, and beyond.

Student Opportunity Fund

The Student Opportunity Fund assists students experiencing financial difficulties that would limit their opportunity to learn or participate in school-sponsored activities. This valuable initiative ensures that our students and their families can all participate in school sponsored activities without placing an undue financial burden on families.

Pittsford Education Foundation

The Pittsford Education Foundation is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to establishing sustainable funding beyond what the government can provide in support of the Pittsford Central School District’s students, families, and educators in their pursuit of educational development and goals. The Pittsford Education Foundation helps ensure all students in the PCSD have equitable access to exceptional educational opportunities. One of the many ways the Foundation supports the District is through the Honor an Educator staff recognition program.

Pittsford Youth Services

Pittsford Youth Services, Inc. (PYS) is dedicated to providing youth and their families with confidential, professional, and affordable social work services in the schools and Pittsford community. PYS strives to enhance social and emotional well-being through counseling, advocacy, educational programs, and informational services. PCSD allocates funds every year to financially and operationally support the important work that PYS provides to our Pittsford community.

Rainbow Classic

Since the Rainbow Classic began, PCSD has raised approximately $600,000 for Golisano Children’s Hospital. Funds raised from this friendly cross-town competition have supported various projects at the hospital, including Pediatric Intensive Care Unit patient rooms, the Child and Adolescent Eating Disorder Program, the Teen Lounge, the Pediatric Palliative Care Program and more. Proceeds from this year’s Rainbow Classic will support the Golisano Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness Center. The 23rd annual Rainbow Classic basketball games on December 22 saw the Pittsford community come together once again to support a great cause, selling out tickets and raising $30,000.

Pink the Rink

Pink the Rink has been a Pittsford School District tradition since 2010 and has raised more than $91,000 for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, a nonprofit advancing breast cancer research and cultivating a community by empowering patients through education, support, and advocacy. This annual event began when Friends of Pittsford Hockey Board Member, Celeste Frohm, proposed the idea for Pink the Rink after watching her son play in a similar event at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

We believe it is important to support our whole community, and to make our community and academic experience more inclusive. Through these incredible programs and initiatives, PCSD teaches our students what it means to lead by example and how to contribute meaningfully to the entire community.
