Inspired by the upcoming April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse, Calkins Road Middle School presents the world premiere of “Midnight at Midday, the Musical Tales of an Eclipse.” This heartfelt script written by Calkins Road teacher John Beel tells the story of several strangers who meet at the moment of totality. It is rich with science and folklore from around the world. The music, by award-winning composer and Pittsford resident Casey Filiaci, features a dozen original songs that capture the magic and mystery of the eclipse experience and the joy of human connection.

“Midnight at Midday, the Musical Tales of an Eclipse” is set in the town of Harmon Corners, NY. Although not on any map, the town has a way of pulling into its orbit the people who need to be there. It’s the home of a girl named Mouse, who has a big spirit and a love for early rock-and-roll; her mother, Baily, a jewelry store owner coping with slow sales; and Flo, a wise but quirky food cart vendor.

On the day of a total solar eclipse, a gymnastics phenom hoping to escape the limelight and five members of a down-on-their-luck country-western band wander into the town. Flo maneuvers everyone into the town park, where they bump into each other at the magic moment of totality. The experience of the eclipse creates a bond between them, and they realize that the key to solving their own problems is to start by helping each other.

The musical will be reprised April 6 at 7 p.m. and again on April 7 at 2:07 p.m. as a featured event of Rochester’s Eclipse Celebration.
