A Message from Superintendent Pero: Urban-Suburban Celebrates 60 Years
As the Urban-Suburban Interdistrict Transfer Program celebrates its 60th Anniversary, Pittsford Central School District honors this milestone and our District’s longtime involvement and success with the Urban-Suburban program.
The Urban-Suburban Interdistrict Transfer Program, coordinated by the Monroe 1 Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), was established in 1965 by New York State law and the regulations of the State Education Department with a purpose to “voluntarily decrease racial isolation, deconcentrate poverty and enhance opportunities for students in the Rochester City School District and in the suburban districts of the Greater Rochester Area.”
Since 1967 when Pittsford Central School District became a part of the Urban-Suburban program, generations of students have benefited from it, both the students who have been a part of the program, and the Pittsford School District community. As one of Monroe County’s early adapters to the program, Pittsford Schools invited 50 elementary and 50 secondary students from the city of Rochester to participate in its 1967 summer school program, and then welcomed 100 Urban-Suburban students to its classrooms that fall. Since that time, thousands of Urban-Suburban students have been part of Pittsford Schools’ rich legacy. This school year, we have 99 students in the Urban Suburban program (31 elementary, 30 middle, 38 high school).
Pittsford Schools is honored to have been a part of Urban-Suburban for nearly 58 years. When students in the Urban-Suburban program come to Pittsford Schools, they become part of our community and are PCSD students, graduates and alums. I don’t take this lightly and value and appreciate each family that entrusts their child’s education to us.
Join me in celebrating Urban-Suburban’s 60th Anniversary and in my gratitude to the generations of families and students who have participated in the program, as this partnership has made a tremendous impact on our Pittsford School community.
Urban-Suburban invites community members to its 60th Anniversary Gala dinner and celebration on Thursday, March 20 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery. Tickets are on sale now: https://givebutter.com/U-S-60th-Event
