A Message from Superintendent Pero: Transportation Update - Steady Progress Underway

Thank you to our families for your patience and support as we worked through the start of the school year with some transportation challenges. I am pleased to share that progress is being made each day, thanks to the dedication of our staff, the flexibility of our bus drivers, and the leadership of Interim Transportation Director Peter Lawrence.

As I mentioned in a recent email to families, the start of the school year was particularly challenging due to staff retirements and leaves among the Transportation Department’s leadership, scheduling and training personnel. Mr. Lawrence, who recently retired as Director of Transportation in Fairport, has stepped in to guide the department with a corrective action plan, stronger communication, and improved training practices. With his leadership and the help of retired staff members who returned temporarily, our transportation system is becoming more stable and efficient.

PCSD is also grateful to the Town of Pittsford for adjusting construction schedules near Mendon High School and on Thornell Road so that morning bus runs are less affected by traffic. This partnership is greatly appreciated in helping to ease traffic and keep our buses on schedule.

Most encouraging of all, fewer bus routes have been cancelled this year — a significant step forward from prior years when three to four routes were cancelled almost daily. Ensuring that all students have consistent transportation has been a primary goal and will continue to be a top priority.

We continue to review bus stop and route requests through our new online process (bus stop review form) and appreciate families’ patience as submissions are carefully worked through in order. The transportation FAQ section on our website is updated regularly with the latest information on delays and adjustments.

We know there is still work to do, but improvements are happening steadily. Thank you again to our families for their partnership and patience and to our transportation team for their commitment to providing safe, timely, and reliable service for every student.
