A New Chapter in Elementary Math Instruction

A New Chapter in Elementary Math Instruction

Pittsford Central School District continues to support strong math instruction across its elementary schools. Starting this school year, elementary teachers will use Amplify, a high-quality resource for the delivery of K-5 math instruction that aligns with Next Generation Learning Standards and prepares all students for success. “This adoption marks a significant step toward a unified, high-quality math experience for all PCSD students,” said Superintendent Michael Pero.

The Amplify program includes both print and digital resources, manipulatives, and centers designed to support students’ mathematical reasoning and communication. It is a comprehensive resource that includes structure and scaffolding that make it accessible to a wide range of learners. Additionally, Amplify supports vertical alignment across grade levels, ensuring consistency in instructional language, strategies, and expectations. This helps students build on prior knowledge and prepares them for future learning.

Last school year Pittsford Schools piloted the Amplify program in 28 elementary classrooms, reaching over 600 students. Teachers in the pilot program met monthly with Amplify coaches and participated in walkthroughs in October and April. Pilot teachers in grades 4 and 5 also had the opportunity to observe Amplify implementation in the classrooms of a neighboring district.  Teachers had positive feedback to share, including increased student-led discourse, improvements with math fluency, and a strong emphasis on deep student thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. The pilot’s success led Pittsford Schools’ Math Steering Committee, with support from the Elementary Academic Council, to recommend full adoption beginning this September 2025.
