Student Board Members

Mendon High School junior Mesude Yusra Ersoz and Sutherland High School senior Manaar Abdelgadir have been selected to serve as ex officio members of the Pittsford Schools Board of Education, working alongside the District’s seven elected Board members, to represent student perspectives. Both were chosen by their school principals following a collaborative process involving teachers and student leaders.

Effective July 1, 2025, New York State requires all school districts (outside of New York City) to appoint at least one high school student as a non-voting member of their boards of education. The initiative aims to strengthen student civic engagement and elevate youth voices in education policy.

“The new legislation underscores the importance of student participation in shaping school district policies, providing students with an authentic experience in governance and public service,” said Superintendent Michael Pero. “We look forward to working with these outstanding students.”

Under the statute, ex officio student board members sit with the board at all public meetings and hearings and may take part in other board activities at the board’s discretion. While they do not have voting rights, they are free to participate in all public board discussions.

Ersoz hopes to use her position to help create a supportive community for all students, whether through clubs, sports, or other activities. “I think this is a great opportunity for us to have a voice in the District as students and share our input on various matters. I want to bring in a new perspective and help as a voice for all students at Mendon,” said Ersoz. She also encourages her peers to share their ideas and concerns with her so she can truly represent Pittsford Schools’ diverse student body.
