Students Take the Stage at Prestigious NYSSMA All-State Concerts

Six Pittsford CSD high school musicians distinguished themselves on one of New York’s most demanding stages, performing at the 89th Annual Winter Conference of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) December 6-7 at Eastman Kodak Hall. Kudos to the below students who are among New York State’s most accomplished young musicians to earn seats in the 2025 All-State ensembles.

Mendon High School

  • Tristan Zhang, Oboe, Symphonic Band
  • Jemma Wallis, Clarinet, Symphonic Band
  • Karthik Jaligama, Viola, Symphony Orchestra

Sutherland High School

  • Michael Shi, Clarinet, Wind Ensemble
  • Ryan Shaffer, Violin, String Orchestra
  • Claire Chen, Violin, Symphony Orchestra

The All-State bands, chorus, orchestra and jazz ensembles are honors groups comprised of the top students from school music departments across the state. The eight groups are directed by renowned guest conductors and perform in one of three concerts during the annual NYSSMA Winter Conference each year.

Each year, more than 6,500 sophomores and juniors audition for just 600 ensemble positions. This year alone, over 2,400 students statewide earned the elite qualifying score of 98 or above, placing Pittsford’s six honorees among the finest young performers in New York.

This achievement reflects years of dedication shared by students and their teachers who commit countless hours to mastering advanced repertoire and preparing for the rigorous All-State audition process.
