Sources of Strength Event Provides Cocoa, Conversation, and Connection

Sources of Strength Event Provides Cocoa, Conversation, and Connection

The recent Sources of Strength Cocoa & Chat gathering was a well-received event at Sutherland High School, bringing students together for meaningful conversations and connection. With hot cocoa in hand, students engaged with peers, shared ideas, and helped strengthen the supportive culture Pittsford schools continue to build.

The Cocoa & Chat event is one of several activities tied to Sources of Strength, a national program designed to harness the power of peer networks to shift school culture toward wellness. Rather than focusing only on risk, the program takes an upstream, strength-based approach, empowering students to promote messages of hope, help, and strength throughout their school and wider community.

At the heart of Sources of Strength is its mission to prevent suicide, bullying, and substance abuse by fostering stronger connections between students and caring adults. The program encourages open dialogue about challenges young people face and equips students with strategies for seeking help and supporting one another. Through interactive, engaging activities, students learn to identify their own strengths and the protective factors that can help them navigate difficult times.

This fall, Mendon and Sutherland High Schools trained teams of Peer Leaders who represent the full spectrum of student life, including the diverse interests, clubs, personalities, and friendship groups in Pittsford Schools. Throughout the year, Peer Leaders guide positive initiatives aimed at strengthening school culture and encouraging healthy behaviors. They work to lift up their peers and promote a supportive, inclusive environment.

PCSD is one of 42 school districts participating in Sources of Strength which is funded through a state grant and coordinated by the University of Rochester Medical Center.
