Why Fair Foundation Aid Matters for Pittsford Schools

Why Fair Foundation Aid Matters for Pittsford Schools

As we continue our work on behalf of students, families, and taxpayers, I want to share an update on our advocacy efforts, why the coming weeks are so important for Pittsford Schools, and what you can do to help advocate for Pittsford’s fair share of NYS Foundation Aid.

Over the past couple of years, New York State Education Foundation Aid has not kept pace with rising costs, and Governor Hochul’s proposed 2026–27 budget again falls short. While school district operating costs typically rise 3–4% annually, Pittsford CSD has received an average 1% Foundation Aid increase over the past two years and is projected to receive the same next year—about $1.50 per student. Because 69% of our budget comes from the tax levy (which is capped by the state) and 22% from Foundation Aid, this funding gap creates serious challenges and has contributed to a projected budget shortfall of more than $1.5 million.

Pittsford Schools has a strong history of responsible fiscal management. Without adequate Foundation Aid, we must continue to find creative ways to balance the budget while protecting programs, remaining within the tax cap, and being mindful of our taxpayers. This includes reducing positions through restructuring and attrition, staying within the tax cap, managing resources carefully, and examining available reserve funds to support programs.

However, these measures are not sustainable without fair, predictable state funding. District leaders are actively advocating with state officials, but community voices are critical. We encourage residents to write to Governor Hochul urging her to prioritize basic K–12 education and provide equitable Foundation Aid for Pittsford and districts across New York State.

Please consider writing to Governor Hochul to improve Foundation Aid to levels that will at least provide the promised adequate educational funding.
