Since May, Mendon High School senior Rain Royce has been interning at the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office, immersing herself in the world of law and public service.

In reflecting on her experience, Rain said: “Having the opportunity to see real trials and some of the hard work that goes behind each case has enabled me to understand more of the complexities of the legal system. Through dissecting evidence and assisting attorneys, my internship has helped me learn real-world skills that I can also share with my peers.”

Outside the office, Rain recently served as a panelist at Edison Tech, speaking to students about the importance of knowing their rights and understanding the law. She also met with Monroe County Legislator William Burgess, further expanding her professional network and gaining insights into public service at the county level.

“She has been an outstanding addition to our team—showing strong work ethic, professionalism, and a real curiosity about the law and public defense,” said Vincent French, Diversity Coordinator and Internship Program Chair at the Public Defender’s Office.
