JRE Student Named Finalist in 2023-2024 Kid Fiction Writing Contest

Jefferson Road Elementary fourth grader Maddie Lincoln was named as a finalist for Scholastic’s Storyworks 2023-2024 Kid Fiction Writing Contest! Maddie's story, "A Rat-ical New Friendship," has been described by judges as “incredibly funny with a heartfelt ending.”

Participating students were asked to come up with an imaginative and compelling original short story that starts with one of three first lines written by Storyworks editors. Maddie chose the first line, “They say that rats are highly intelligent animals” and created a five-chapter story, each chapter written from the point of view of either clever and sassy fifth grader Mel Birchpine, or Hami (real name: Duke Vladimir XVI), the equally clever and sassy pet hamster of Mel’s younger sister.

As a finalist, a summary of “A Rat-ical New Friendship” is posted to the Storyworks website alongside Maddie’s photo, and she has been awarded a $20 gift card to the Scholastic Store Online.
