The study of military history is a crucial element of civic participation and actively shapes students' growth in next-generation skills by enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities. Two courses currently offered in Pittsford high schools, Military History and Vietnam: A Historic Perspective, are being revamped to meet the growing student interest on this topic.
“Students often want to learn about wars that are happening now,” explained Social Studies Teacher Nicole Barry. "Many students ask us to cover the wars and battles in more detail. Unfortunately, there is not enough time in the current course structure to go into more detail on those topics.”
Early Military History and Modern Military History will soon replace the existing classes. Each course runs for a semester and is offered alternate years. The expanded curriculum will delve deeper into the history of military conflicts and their impact on societal, economic, and political aspects.
Early Military History maintains its focus on warfare spanning from Ancient Greece and Rome up to the Age of Napoleon. Modern Military History extends beyond the Vietnam War from the Civil War to the present day. Both courses examine the impact on the course of human history of key generals, conquerors, weapons, technologies, armor, tactics, and military strategies. Additionally, students will engage in hands-on computer simulations to enhance their understanding of military strategy. Students will consider the potential consequences of choices, engage in informed decision-making, and navigate the ethical dilemmas associated with warfare.
