Single Stream Recycling: A Simpler Way to Recycle at School

As students and staff kick off the new school year, they may notice more blue recycling bins around Pittsford schools. This is because Pittsford CSD is a part of the new countywide initiative using Single Stream Recycling where all recyclables, including paper, plastic, metals and glass go into a single bin and is later sorted at a central facility. Instead of separating out paper and other recyclable materials, all your recyclables can go into one bin.

This process aims to simplify the recycling process, helps reduce waste and protects the environment. But not everything belongs in the recycling bin. Liquids and food need to be emptied out of containers, and colored plastic cups and straws are not recyclable so should not be put in these bins.

Every classroom in the Pittsford schools will have a blue recycling bin, and they will be in common areas like cafeterias and teacher lounges.
