Students’ Creative Writing Wins Awards in Literary Contest

Congratulations to Pittsford students Thehara Ubayawardena (MHS) and Jasmine Wu (SHS) for their award-winning creative writing entered in the Sokol Awards Literary Contest sponsored by the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library. Ubayawardena won second place for her poetry, “Social Norms Pop Quiz.” Wu earned third place in prose for her story, “Mr. Patched Bear.” The Sokol Awards Ceremony and Reception will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025 from 4pm-5:30pm in the Kate Gleason Auditorium at Central Library, 115 South Avenue.

Since 1958, the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library (FFRPL) has sponsored a creative writing contest for Monroe County high school students. In 1985, Eli & Mildred Sokol established an endowment through the Community Foundation, which makes it possible for FFRPL to award monetary prizes to the winners: $300 for first prize winners, $200 for second prize, $100 for third prize, and one $300 prize for Performance.
