Mask Optional Information and Q&A (March 1, 2022)

Dear PCSD Families and Staff,

Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic we have stayed true to the mandates and guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control, New York State Department of Health and Monroe County Department of Public Health. Our decisions have not been made to placate different interest groups, rather we have remained steadfast in following the guidance from experts in the public health and medical fields, and we thank them. As we move closer to an endemic state, we are again following guidance that provides for schools to be mask optional. This is the only change happening tomorrow. The attached document provides detailed information about this transition to optional masking in our schools.

We realize this change will bring relief to some and increased anxiety to others. I would like to speak to the opportunity in our community to be good neighbors and respect each other’s choice. Whether you choose to continue to wear a mask, decide to wear it under certain circumstances or go without it, these choices are all okay. As adults, we have an opportunity to model civility, humanity and compassion for our children. I hope that you will embrace this and respect whatever choice our neighbors make.

We are awaiting guidance from the medical professionals as it relates to return to school after a COVID-19 positive test, contact tracing and quarantine protocols. This information will be available once we receive it. Thank you for your flexibility and support as we have, as a community and society, shifted our behaviors quickly and wholly throughout the pandemic.

Sincerely,

Michael Pero
Superintendent of Schools
