Pittsford Town Supervisor Bill Smith would like to ask parents to remind their children to stay off the railroad trestle bridge over the canal in the Village. Freight trains frequently use this rail line, and it is not safe for pedestrian use. The fence blocking entrance to the trestle has deteriorated over time, so the Town reached out to CSX Railroad who has submitted a work order for its repair. While this repair is in process, it is especially important to be aware of the dangers of walking on this bridge or any railway line. It takes a freight train about two miles to come to a complete stop, and two young people were killed on this trestle bridge in 1997. Because of the way sound comes from a moving train, someone on the trestle can't tell from the sound whether an approaching train is nearby or far away. Stay safe and stay off the trestle bridge!
