Attendance Boundary Revision Approved

During the April 20, 2020 Board of Education meeting, the recommendation by the Attendance Boundary Review Committee to move a portion of the Mendon Center Elementary School attendance area to Allen Creek Elementary School and another portion to Jefferson Road Elementary School was approved. The newly defined boundaries will take effect at the start of the 2020-21 school year in order to resolve an enrollment issue at Mendon Center Elementary School that projects the school will exceed capacity as early as the 2020-21 school year.

Elementary students in the newly defined zones will either attend Allen Creek Elementary School or Jefferson Road Elementary School, however rising MCE 5th grade students residing in new attendance zones will have the option to stay at MCE or relocate to the new school assignment with their younger sibling(s).

As part of this transition, ACE Principal Michael Biondi and JRE Principal Shawn Clark will schedule time to connect virtually with families/students affected and will work with them regarding class placements and other transition-related questions families may have.

“I understand a change can bring forth an array of feelings, however, find comfort in knowing that your child(ren) will be well taken care of no matter which elementary school they attend,” said Superintendent Michael Pero who also reminded families that their children will be reunited with other former MCE students in grade six since pre-established routing to Calkins Road Middle School for these students remains unchanged.

The recommendation came from the Attendance Boundary Review Committee which was launched at the January 13, 2020 Board meeting with the purpose of reviewing the enrollment projections at Mendon Center Elementary School and making boundary revision recommendations. The stakeholder committee held a number of meetings, including public meetings on February 4, February 11 and March 11, to review maps and information related to solving the defined challenges of:
  • Mendon Center Elementary School’s enrollment projected to exceed capacity as early as 2020-21
  • Jefferson Road Elementary School has space
  • Allen Creek Elementary School has declining enrollment
The committee’s review and subsequent recommendation were conducted using the following Guiding Principles:
  • Mendon Center Elementary students must remain on the same middle school/high school track
    • Students on the Barker Road Middle School to Mendon High School path will NOT be impacted
  • Consideration will be given to NOT moving students going into fifth grade for the 2020-21 school year
  • Consider the preservation of neighborhood continuity through attention to boundaries that won’t divide a street between two schools
  • Consider a neighborhood’s proximity to each of the affected schools
  • Consider transportation implications
  • Proposed options cannot involve a capital project given the timing/District space
  • Proposal must include enough movement to address the challenges
