The library has begun quiet study hours this week and next in anticipation of mid-terms. Please help us maintain a quiet and focused study environment for those preparing for exams. Thank you.

 

Attention seniors – In addition to turning in your transcript release form, please remember to enter your colleges into your Common App so all supporting documents can be sent.

 

RIT is hosting a "Girls in STEM" Fair on Saturday, February 23rd. Free and open to the public. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/2RDqGX2 The deadline is February 8th.

 

Attention Master Minds: There is a meet today. Please arrive at 3:05. Let Mr. Dougherty know if you are going.

 

Are you stressed about midterms or just need some time to relax? Come to Diversity Club's "Chillax" event today at 2:30 in Room 102. There will be snacks & games. Come try to solve a Rubik's Cube or watch our very own Ethan Coolidge solve a puzzle in under 20 seconds! Hope to see you there!

 

Our annual Pink the Rink Panther Hockey game will be on Saturday, January 19th at the Polisseni Center at RIT at 7:00 vs. Webster Schroeder. This game recognizes those affected by Breast Cancer and raises awareness and money for Breast Cancer Research. Tickets and t-shirts will be on sale for the game in the Commons next week starting on Monday. Tickets and t-shirts are $5 each for a neat package of $10!

 

Animal Club will meet tomorrow, 1/11, at 2:30 in Room 110B. We will have some therapy dogs visiting. All are welcome!

 

To any Juniors who have a 90% or higher cumulative GPA and would like to be invited to apply to National Honor Society MUST register at least 30 hours of community service with the community service office by Friday February 1st. Please keep in mind that National Honor Society only accepts community service hours completed in high school. Any questions please see NHS advisor Mrs. Rasmussen in the Social Studies office.

 

SAVE THE DATE! FAME’s (Family Advocating Music Education) biggest fundraiser Cabaret 2019: A Night of Motown Magic is one month away! February 2, 2019 from 7:00-10:00 pm in the MHS Commons. Advance tickets are $6.00 and tickets at the door will be $7.00. Brett Davidsen from WHEC-News10NBC will be emceeing this fun event. Come support the Mendon High School music department and students – performances by extracurricular ensembles, a silent auction, and light refreshments for purchase. Community Service

Need community service hours? Many volunteers are needed for the Odyssey of the Mind Spontaneous Day, Saturday, February 2nd at Thornell Road School from 8:30am- 12:30 pm assisting teams. No experience needed! Interested students should contact Mrs. Waldman in the library to sign up to volunteer or email her at Kristina_Otto@pittsford.monroe.edu

 

Are You Interested in a Career in Medicine? The 10th Annual Premedical Conference at the U of R will be on Saturday February 2nd from 8:00AM– 3:00PM. Deadline to register is January 12th. Participants will learn about health care professions in the form of workshops, panels, labs, and medical procedure simulations. The cost is $20, but some scholarships are available. If you are interested in learning more about a career in Nursing, Strong Memorial Hospital is hosting two more career awareness events. The next event one is on Tuesday, February 12th from 8-11AM. Please see Mrs. Anderson in the Counseling office for a permission slip. Must be at least 16 years old. Deadline is February 1st.

 

Juniors who are interested in learning more about the New Vision Medical Careers Program can sign up with Mrs. Anderson in the Counseling Office for the Visit Day on Tuesday, February 5th from 8:00-11:00 AM. The morning will include an overview of the New Vision program and tours of Rochester General and St. Ann's Community Hospitals. Transportation will be provided from Mendon. Permissions slips are due on January 25th. Register soon as space is limited -- first-come, first-served!

 

Freshmen Interested in Engineering, Robotics, Designing and Manufacturing: The Summer Advanced Manufacturing Experience (SAME) is a free, three-week program from July 8th-July 19th for current 8th and 9th graders in which students will learn how to design and manufacture products, tour companies and earn 3 college credits through MCC. See Mrs. Anderson in the Counseling Office for an application and more information. Applications are due by April 12, 2019.

IN SPORTS

Panthers Wrestling won an exciting match against Rush-Henrietta last night. 35 -29. It all came down to the last match of the night, tied 29-29 Senior and Captain Alec Mariciniak clinched the win for the Panthers with a Pin in the first round. Other wins last night from John Santowski by Pin! Patrick Cowie win on points, Josh "Robo" Robinson win on points,and Bobby Foltz win on points. . Come cheer on the Panthers next Wednesday January 16th at our senior night and match again Fairport.

Mendon Music Families! The January FAME (Families Advocating Music Education) Meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 15 at 7:00 pm in the MHS Chorus Room. We will be planning for Cabaret 2019. All parents with children enrolled in music ensembles are invited to attend. It is not too late to become an active member. If you are interested in becoming an active member of FAME, but are unable to attend the meeting, please email mhsfame@gmail.com

Boys State Summer Program: The Pittsford Rayson-Miller American Legion Post 899 is seeking candidates, junior boys with a GPA of 90 or higher, for the 2019 Boys State program (June 27 – July 2, 2019 at SUNY Morrisville). Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs. Boys State also enhances organizational and speaking skills. If selected, The Rayson Miller Post will pay for the student to participate in the program. Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Rochester Annual Essay Contest: For students in grades 10-12. Submit a 1000-word essay on the topic: "I think the first duty of society is justice" (Alexander Hamilton). First prize $250, Second prize $100, Third prize $50. Children of members of the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Rochester are not eligible to enter. Deadline is 3/15/2019. Part of Keeping Education Extraordinary in Pittsford is recognizing all of the adults that work so well with our children. Please consider honoring a special adult that has made a positive impact on your child. This adult can be anyone working in the schools. Once the form and donation are received, the Superintendent, a school Board member, and a KEEP member will surprise the educator during the school day and will present him/her with a KEEP mug and/or other gift, and we will recognize the educator by announcing who nominated them and why.

For students interested in a career in Nursing, the University of Rochester Medical Center Strong Memorial Hospital is hosting a series of nursing career awareness events: February 12 and March 5 from 8-11AM. The events are meant to help students learn about a career in nursing and will include a guest panel of nurses from different areas and a tour of in-patient areas. Students must be at least 16 years old and must provide their own transportation. Permission slips for the February 12th event are available now and will be due no later than February 1, 2019.
