Mendon and Sutherland High School Student-Athletes Participate in Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Workshop

Mendon and Sutherland High School student-athletes and coaches participated in a half-day diversity and inclusion leadership workshop facilitated by the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE).

Section V of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) brought together student-athletes, coaches and athletic directors from 40 Rochester area high schools for the workshop. The workshop was designed to empower athletic administrators, coaches and athletes to be leaders in discussing and addressing matters of racism, prejudice, diversity and inclusivity within their teams, schools and communities.

During the workshop, the participants learned about diversity- and inclusion-related concepts and how they can be champions of change to improve race relations and eliminate racial discrimination and social injustices. Students also worked in groups to discuss challenges related to racism and race relations in the community and ideas that could be implemented to tackle these challenges.

Pittsford Central School District participants included Mendon High School students Lexi Green, HaJoon Lee, Lexi Miskey, Grace O'Hara and John Santowski; Sutherland High School students Natalie Aroesty, Keeghan Cummings, Parker Cummings, Katie Downey, Danny Lawther and Jackson Wallace; and coaches Josh Dougherty (MHS), Anna Rasmussen (SHS) and Andrew Whipple (District).

RISE is a national nonprofit that educates and empowers the sports community to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations. RISE works to inspire leaders in athletics to create positive change on matters of race and equality.
