The 2020-2021 PCSD School Calendar has been approved by the Board of Education and reflects an effort to support our students’ well-being by providing days off during long stretches of the school year and to manage some unique features of the government holidays and designations.
This year, Labor Day will fall on the latest day possible, September 7, 2020. Most years, students are typically back to school a few days before September 7. Starting after the 7th would have caused our students to go long stretches during the course of the school year without a day off. In an attempt to improve this situation, school will start on Wednesday, September 2, 2020. School will be closed on September 4 and 7, 2020 which allows for a four-day Labor Day weekend.
Further benefits and considerations of this year’s school calendar:
- Often, the first days of school are focused on new routines and orientations. By starting before Labor Day, our students are able to ease into school, understand procedures and expectations, relieve back-to-school nervousness, and then enjoy a four day weekend.
- As a security precaution, school will not be session for the national elections on November 3, 2020 as our schools are used as polling sites.
- The stretch between spring break and graduation is longer than we’ve seen in previous years, therefore, Memorial Day break will be a four-day weekend allowing students additional time to recharge and enable families the opportunity to spend more time together.
