July 31 Message from Superintendent Pero

Friday, July 31

Dear Families,

It has certainly been a busy week as District leaders have been configuring a plan for the reopening of schools that incorporates the mandatory elements outlined in the NYSED’s School Reopening Guidance Document, which are due to NYS Education Department today, July 31.

Thank you for joining me last night for our online parent event and District reopening discussion. I apologize for the technical issues that cut the live stream short. A server at BOCES crashed which cut our connectivity. Although the live stream unexpectedly ended, the panel continued to answer questions, and the recording of the event proceeded. A link to the video will be posted later today on the District's dedicated COVID-19 website at and on our YouTube channel.

During the event, I shared the plans for the new school year, explained the options that are available to families and outlined what a typical day will look like at the elementary, middle and high school levels. I was joined on a panel by Board of Education President Amy J. Thomas, Assistant Superintendent for Business Darrin Kenney, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Melanie Ward and Director of Student Services Dr. Patricia Vaughan-Brogan. Together, we answered questions from District PTSA President Sarah Pelusio who asked questions we received from parents.

Over 150 questions came from parents about reopening plans and procedures. Although we were not able to answer every question we received during the event last night, we will continue to update and add information to our Reopening Q&A document. You can find the Q&A document here: Link.

Fall 2020 Parent Questionnaire

Parents will be receiving a questionnaire this morning in a separate email from your school principal. In that message, you will be directed to a link that will ask you to choose the Temporary Learning Model preference for your child(ren) for the fall 2020 semester. Once a learning model is chosen, parents will need to commit to that model for one full semester. We have created a COVID-19 sub website that includes the options available at each level. This LINK will take you to that webpage if you need more information about the options.

The questionnaire will also ask you to consider transportation for your child(ren) to and from school. As the District continues to follow new social distancing procedures, we are asking parents who are able to drive their child(ren) to or from school to do so in order to help reduce density on school buses.

As the new school year soon approaches, please remember the start of the school year and the plans set forth will be different, but are temporary.

Please note, the District’s annual printed calendar will arrive in homes later than usual. It is expected to be in homes by the week of August 24 or sooner. In the meantime, please refer to the website calendar for important dates. Thank you.

Have a great weekend and stay well.
