BOARD INSIGHTS: Remembering Your Why – An Open Letter to the PCSD Community
It’s in challenging times like these that even the most heartfelt “thank you” seems insufficient. But if you believe like we do that big things come in small packages, then our simple 2-word sentiment is just the right size. We’re beyond grateful for everything you do so well for the children and families in our District. We see you; we see the devotion to your students. We all feel the difference you’re making in our lives. Thank you.
In his book, Start With Why, Simon Sinek tells us, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.”
Sinek goes on to say, “Very few organizations can clearly articulate WHY they do what they do. By WHY I mean your purpose, cause, or belief. WHY does your organization exist? WHY do you get out of bed every morning? And WHY should anyone care?”
Our Mission Is Our Why
At Pittsford Schools, we’ve already answered those questions. We need to look no further than our mission statement to find them. Our Why – that is, why we exist as an organization – is to do your best work; be your best self; and make a difference in the life of others.
This statement applies to educators, staff, and administrators every bit as much as it does to students. Every day you do your best work. Every day, you put forth the very best version of yourself. And – perhaps most important of all – every day you make a difference in the lives of others.
Best Is Best; And It’s Pretty Darn Good
And you know what? Your “best” is pretty gosh darn good. Are we perfect? No, but that’s only because we’re human. It isn’t for lack of effort. And it’s why continuous improvement is one of our District’s core values. As a learning organization, we know there’s always room for improvement.
And maybe, just maybe, that’s the source of our frustration. We feel that our best isn’t good enough. We want to be better. The key is that you don’t stop there. You’re always trying to be better. The effort is always there. The results are too. We see them every day in the way you support your students and the way you support one another.
THAT is why you get out of bed every morning.
The Results of Your Work
One of the coolest things we do as a Board of Education is visit each of our school buildings. At least once a month (it’s actually much more frequent than that), we get to tour each building and see the classrooms and hallways where you work your magic. We watch kids as they bound into school from their busses, greeted by teachers, staff and one another. Even for that brief bit of time, we get to be with students; they’re our Why too.
And we see the smiles in their eyes.
Our Professional Home
Pittsford Schools may not be where we lay our heads at night, but it is our professional home. It’s where we come together with our work family to do our best and be our best. It’s the place where you give your heart and soul to help children learn, develop and grow; it’s also where we make a difference in the lives of others.
Remember a couple of the closing lines in the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.” In one line, the Wizard reminds the Tin Man, “A heart is not measured by how much you love, but how much you are loved by others.”
The other line, of course, is “There’s no place like home.”
With gratitude, we wish you the warmest of Holiday seasons,
Pittsford Central School District Board of Education
